This show was always going to be a winner as my husband and I had our first date on 1st January 1980. This is the soundtrack of the first 10 years together.
The dodgy fashions – and that was just the audience! – synthesised tracks and lookalike hot gossip dance group, took us from Frankie Goes to Hollywood, through Blondie, Soft Cell, then Wham!, with even a nod to Michael Jackson, to name a few. The performers worked really hard with high energy dancing and singing, they looked as though they had as much fun as we, the audience, did. Background screens ran footage of some of the iconic videos from the era and with a bright 80’s light show added extra to the show.
From the first track everyone was on their feet dancing and singing along – and yes I still knew all the words! In respect to their slightly older audience they allowed us to sit down for the odd ballad – the most stand-out of these was True sung by a Tony Hadley lookalike. It is worth mentioning the musicians who played for every track keyboards, bass, lead guitar and a drummer dressed like Rod Stewart, they didn’t flag once and nailed tune after tune.
We would definitely go again, taking a group of ‘80’s’ friends with us. Fancy dress while optional added to the whole event. It would also be a great party event for a work do – so long as there was a local venue to carry on dancing in afterwards. The venue allowed drinks in plastic glasses, throughout, which certainly added to the party atmosphere. The venue itself is a rather soulless 70’s build but the staff were very helpful and friendly and the venue didn’t detract from the show at all.
At £18 a ticket it was certainly good value when you compare it to prices of other theatre events.
