A Judgement in Stone at the Theatre Royal Glasgow Review

19-24 June 2017

This adapted Ruth Rendell murder mystery thriller is about a timid and slightly awkward housekeeper Eunice, who after not long taking up a new job in the Coverdale residence as a housekeeper finds the family murdered. The story is told through the investigation of the murders and Eunice’s accounts from the startup of her employment to the night in question. Full of suspense and at times humour this production will not disappoint. It is light hearted and fun and had me laughing throughout and guessing until the end.

The cast were fantastic as they portrayed the wealthy family, their help and the investigating detectives. However, it was Deborah Grant that stole the show for me. She was hysterical as the bold and brash post woman and friend of Eunice.

The stage setting was grand and represented what you would imagine a wealthy family living room and home to look and feel. Perfect for provided the setting for the mystery to unfold. The costumes continuously changing throughout were again in keeping with those of their respective characters.

The Theatre Royal is a modern theatre with a choice of bars on each of the floors and very helpful and friendly staff. Although modern the theatre itself still has the feel of a traditionally old theatre and feels intimate and cosy. Our seats in the dress circle provided a good view of the stage. The theatre is located in the city centre which means it is easily accessible by public transport and has on street parking close by as well as an array or bars and restaurants for pre and post show drinks and food.

I really enjoyed my evening at the Theatre Royal watching this light-hearted suspense filled production which I would recommend to friends and family. Overall, I would give the production 4 stars out of 5.
