Adventure Island Mini Golf at Star City Birmingham Review

Arriving at Star City (just off M6 near Birmingham) is quite an event. It’s well sign posted and easy to find. Bold, bright colours and loud designs adorn this space age styled mega complex of restaurants, arcades and cinema screens. Parking is a doddle.

The Adventure Island Mini Golf unit is roughly dead centre and uncharacteristically bland in comparison.

This changes upon entry as the usually manned ticket office is be-fronted by a sign directing ‘golfers’ to the first floor.

Toilets (including disabled and separate baby change) are found on the ground floor with a comfy selection of sofas guarded by bear grabbing arcade slot machines.

Oddly, an escalator whisks players to the first floor but your return is via stairs or a separately accessed lift.

Upon arrival, a young smiling jovial girl welcomed the three of us; provided a brief description of the concept of crazy golf and then asked us to each choose a ball and take our clubs to Tee 1.

Pushchair access is permitted and our city buggy (small wheels and no offroad ability) tackled the first course with ease.

Each Tee is clearly marked, and the theme of course 1 is Aztecs and monkeys. Needless to say we fitted in well!

My son (too small to play, being just over 15 months old) enjoyed the scenery and noises – contributing his replies to the ape noises.

The greens are good and very well maintained, especially considering the volume of footfall it received daily.

Yes – this place was very busy (it is school holidays after all).

We finished course 1 in about 35 minutes and accepted the offer of playing course 2 which began on the first-floor mezzanine.

This sadly is not pushchair or wheelchair friendly so lucky for me, my son hadn’t eaten his usual lunchtime menu.

Course 2 is split over two mezzanine floors, with funnily enough, some crazy games involved.

Both courses end with the chance to play a special ‘hole in one’ Tee, which neither of us won, but you are rewarded with a humorous comment from the gods of the Aztecs, something which my daughter thought most apt in my case – something to do with me “obviously playing blindfolded” I think?

Other than access limitations, this is a superb way to have quick fun before bowling or between the latest blockbuster and a meal.

Good value family entertainment (if booked in advance – download the Star City app for offers etc), and thoroughly recommended for all ages!

Great fun!
