I have shopped at Aldi for many years and always find it represents value for money. I get far more for my money than the other leading supermarkets and with a large family who seem to be forever eating budgeting is a must for me. So I was over the moon to be asked to review items from their Christmas range and couldn’t wait to get started.
Dairyfine Milk Chocolate Coins 90g: These came in a gold net and were creamy and tasty. The net was a little hard to get into but I find that is always the case with this kind of item but once opened the silver foil around the coins came away easily. I will be buying more of these for our tree.
Specially Selected Mince Pies (6 pack): The all butter pastry on these was delicious and they were stuffed full of luxury mincemeat. We warmed them through in the oven and had with cream. The sugar dusting on the top went crunchy when hot and complimented the different textures. The packaging presents the mince pies well as it has a clear plastic window showing just how scrummy they are.
Connoisseur Christmas Pudding 100g: Beautifully wrapped this individual pudding is ideal for one. It was packed with fruit and cherries and you could taste the brandy rum and sherry coming through.
Top Iced Fruit Cake Bar 400g: This was by far my favourite and I have since been back and bought two more to put away for Christmas get-togethers, that’s if I can resist that long! The cake is rich and moist and bursting with juicy sultanas and cherries. The marzipan is soft and the consistency is just right and the icing tops it off perfectly. As it is only a small cake it would be perfect for couples and small families.
12 Month Matured Luxury Christmas Pudding 750g: From the specially selected range this was divine. Made using only the finest wines (and you can really tell) and loaded with almonds, pecans, fruits and glace cherries and candied peel this is truly a treat for the taste buds. There is a hint of mixed spice in the mix and a trace of sherry and cognac coming through. My mum is the Christmas pudding expert in our family and her verdict was 10/10.
All-in-all, all the food items I received were packaged well and looked inviting. Instructions were clearly visible and everything tasted and looked great.
Chianti Classico Riserva: Another superb product from Aldi’s specially selected range. This is a red wine from Tuscany made with black and red fruits with a hint of tomato and chocolate. The fragrance when I opened the bottle was out of this world. It is quite a thick full bodied drink and we thoroughly enjoyed it with nibbles while watching television.
Maynard’s 10 Year Old Aged Tawny Port: I have to admit I don’t really drink port, only in cheeky Vimto’s! So it was a new experience for me. My nana often used to have a port and lemon so I had tasted that combination too. It had a very smooth texture and poured beautifully. I wasn’t too sure what to sample it with so I did a bit of research and it seemed it is a drink for whenever takes your fancy! My partner and I had a couple of glasses each with some cheese and crackers and really enjoyed it. It is 20% volume so not for the faint hearted. Another delicious drink.
Riesling from the Exquisite Collection: This white wine comes from Australia and I found it a bit too dry for my liking. When I added a little (and it was a very small amount) of lemonade it made all the difference and I found I loved this drink. My dad drank it as it came and said it was one of the best Riesling’s he has tasted. Green apple, lime and grapefruit notes along with hints of tangerines means it has a fantastic kick to it and made a perfect addition to the evening meal of fish.
Myself and my family testers all loved every product. As I have already mentioned I shop at my local Aldi weekly so it was no surprise to me that the Christmas range is outstanding. As always Aldi represents value for money.
Well done Aldi.
