Anarkali Restaurant London Review

We visited Anarkali Restaurant in West London on a balmy summer’s evening. The staff weren’t expecting us, so it was especially nice that their service was excellent. This restaurant is a step up from your local Indian restaurant, with an exotic ambience and crispness to the decor.

After being seated and looking through the menu we ordered papadoms first, which arrived with the 6 dressings you’d expect, all homemade. As we were eating, more and more guests arrived, all of whom were regulars and greeted by the staff. The tables were being set up before the guests arrived, it was that friendly in there they knew what the guests would be ordering before they set foot in the place.

Our starters were a mixture of taster items. It was quite unexpected how good the chicken and salmon were, and I made sure not to fill myself up with the starter course. The main courses that were being served around us were too good to miss out on.

For our main course we ordered the tandoori chicken and the butter chicken. The butter chicken was to die for – so light but so much flavour and didn’t have the overpowering buttery texture you get in other Indian restaurants.  All the courses were made fresh for us, and the service was superb.  Each waiter came over and cleared our table as each drink and course was finished, and the timeliness of the courses was unexpectedly good.

For dessert, we asked for recommendations and ended up with the mango ice cream. The mango ice cream was obviously homemade and had a texture that changed as it melted in your mouth.

As we were leaving, there was a large party of locals meeting on the table next to us. Everyone was greeted by name and seated just so, with the chef, (who is also the owner) coming out to greet the regulars, including us. It made me feel like I wanted to go back and be part of this Saturday night party we had obviously been missing out on.

Tip: Ask to sit on one of the tables outside as Hammersmith is a great place to people watch!
