Baked in a mug? I thought – that’s a novel idea, I’d like to try that, and as luck would have it I got the opportunity to do just that. I am a competent but not brilliant cook and I have never had much luck with brownies so this seemed ideal for me.

The pack I received contained 4 individual pots of dry ingredients and I just needed to add some butter and water. The instructions were clear and simple:

Put the butter in a mug and warm in a microwave until just melted – around 20 seconds.

Add 1 pot of mug brownie mix.

Mix in 2 tbsp (30ml) water and give it a good stir.

Return to microwave and cook on full power for 60 seconds (based on an 800w microwave – adjust a little either way if you have a more or less powerful one).

Leave to cool for about 5 minutes and then devour with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or sprinkle on some marshmallows.

(the directions did not specify whether the butter should be salted or unsalted – I used unsalted).

I have a 900w microwave and it took longer than 20 seconds to melt the butter – this may have been because my butter came straight from the fridge and the mugs I was using were quite thick; consequently I decided not to adjust the timing for the actual cooking period.

The result was great. A lovely texture and flavour, sometimes I find that Belgian chocolate can be quite bitter but this was smooth and delicious. We tried the brownies “neat” to begin with and then added the recommended scoop of vanilla ice cream, which added to the enjoyment!

The brownies are available in other flavours and there is also a gluten free option; check out the website for details of these and other BakedIn products –  www.bakedin.co.uk  you will also find a list of retailers and they are available to purchase online.

I think these are a brilliant idea. Quick, simple and delicious. You can’t really go wrong.

Now I have a dilemma – what to do with the remaining two pots of brownie mix? I could give another one to my husband, but that would just be spoiling him. I could save them for my grandchildren to do when they next visit, they would love that or, and I think this is my preferred option, I can just keep them all to myself!
