Sunday evening me and my partner were invited to review a three course meal at the Bar + Block Steakhouse in Whitely. This restaurant has only been open about a month and is already proving to be a very popular addition to the Whiteley Shopping Centre. There is also four hours free parking which is always a bonus.

Upon arrival, we were shown to a little booth, I thought it was a lovely touch that they bring you a bottle of water and some beef flavoured popcorn which is complimentary while you decide what to order. There is a huge variety to choose from on the menu, it was very difficult to choose but for a starter we chose a Ploughman’s sharing block for me this was the highlight of our meal it comes with a Scotch egg cut in half two sausage rolls, cheese, pickle, lightly toasted bread and two different types of beef. The portion sizes were very generous with plenty for the two of us, and you could tell the food was freshly cooked using quality ingredients as there was just so much flavour.

For my main I had the smoked Paprika chicken and ribs consisting of fries, ribs, chicken and these gorgeous spicy beans which had just the right kick to them. Yet again I couldn’t fault the food in anyway, the only thing for me was that half a chicken was a little too much for me to eat, but it was incredibly moist and tasty. My other half went for a 10-ounce steak and asked for it to be cooked medium rare and for the first time ever he had no complaints as most places he finds the steaks are either overcooked or tough. This came with lovely chunky chips done in beef dripping, the beef we were told comes from English breeds that are kept over in America, we wondered whether it was the different grazing or maybe it was just the way it was cooked but my other half said it was superb.

We just about managed to squeeze in desert. I had the triple chocolate brownie with chocolate ice cream it was very rich, just how I like it. My partner choosing the churros sundae with lemon curd and clotted cream with every bit been eaten, it was the perfect way to finish off a lovely meal.

For drinks, we were tempted to try some mocktails. I must say at first I didn’t know what they were but they are alcohol free cocktails. We were told that a favourite was the Cherry Bakewell so my partner went for one of those while I chose a tropical flavoured ticki mocki. These were very refreshing and tasted delicious, with very different flavours they complimented the meal perfectly.

You can tell the layout has obviously been very well thought out I love the leather booths which were very comfortable and the open kitchen adds space and allows a little peek at the goings on in the kitchen. The staff were wonderful, very polite and always ready to help in any way that was needed and always nearby to answer any questions you may have about the food. The staff I noticed were always happy and willing to give you plenty of time so you never feel rushed or pressured.

The prices are very reasonable considering the high quality of the food and the generous portions and you certainly won’t be leaving hungry. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone even vegetarians as they also do vegetarian food, when next in the area we will most certainly be back for a second visit.

Rating: 5/5 thumbs_up
