I wasn’t sure what to expect from this show other than the promise of “a breathtaking show which fuses the noble art of boxing with dance”.

Boxe Boxe has to be one of the most original performances I have ever seen. A team of eight dancers who make up Compagnie Käfig, take to the stage accompanied by a string quartet and what follows is just over an hour’s extravaganza of dance, kick boxing, acrobatics and body pumping.

The choreography is outstanding and each scene flows into the next effortlessly with the dancers moving between grace and aggression as befits their theme of life in the boxing ring. At times they are in the Ring itself with the oversized referee (a character who adds comic flair). At other times they are training with punch bags and balls. Red boxing gloves become puppets. At times you will laugh. At times you will gape. Overall I would describe the show as powerful on all levels.

Lighting is used with great effect and helps to create the amazing atmosphere as does the beautiful classical music and eerie sound effects made by the stringed instruments.

The dancers are incredible. What talent, what strength! The things they can do with their bodies defies belief at times – balancing their entire body weight on one hand, spinning endlessly on their heads. To the point where I did find myself squirming in my seat – surely those moves are not possible?!

The show lasted for just over an hour and there was no interval. There was a question and answer session with the dancers at the end.

The theatre at Milton Keynes is a modern theatre and is very spacious with great facilities and good views from all seats. I come fairly regularly and always find it is easy to park (free of charge in the evening). The theatre has a number of bars serving drinks and there is also a pianist in the foyer. Being central to Milton Keynes there are lots of bars and restaurants next door if you want to extend your evening out.

So my verdict on the show? Definitely one to watch if you are looking for something unique and original and you are a fan of movement and dance.

Rating: 5/5
