We visited the Lowry Theatre in Salford Quays, Manchester on Sunday night to see Brian Conley in his Alive and Dangerous tour. The Lowry theatre is easily accessible and parking is plentiful in the adjacent Lowry outlet. Parking charges are fairly reasonable with a cost of £4.50 for while we were at the show. However I would advise to get a pre-paid ticket as it took us half an hour to get out the car park after the show.
Staff at the theatre are friendly and helpful and we managed to get our seats prior to the shows 8pm start. The theatre was almost full, though at 36 years, my partner and I felt we were probably 10 or more years younger than the rest of the audience.
Alive and Dangerous – the Brian Conley show was described as we had seen him on the television in the past and we looked forward to the show. At the beginning there was a compilation of his work with a history of Brian on a big screen. Brian comes on to the stage with the large presence that he has, all the time working the audience and ensuring that he is engaging with us the whole time. I was shrinking in my seat to make myself invisible so he didn’t pick on me. He got a member of the audience on the stage and sent him to get changed whilst he chatted to his wife and called her mother-in-law! The audience were roaring with laugher as he lightly touched on off the chuff topics before he brings out the audience member for some full monty action.
Brian had a variety of acts for the show, looking back at his career and acts he has performed on the TV. This did get a little repetitive towards the second half of the show and whilst he has a great singing voice it did feel a little too much after all the musicals he was re-enacting. His opening warm up act was again very good at what he did, though the first time he was on stage it was pimped up baton twirling. He redeemed himself the second half with juggling, and a number of tricks he performed. I didn’t dislike this, it was just not what I expected.
Brian Conley, is Mr Variety and he certainly showed this during his performance, he even did some fire tricks and whilst it wasn’t my cup of tea the comedy was belly tickling and he did have the audience in stiches.
On the way out of the performance, I did hear lots of fans saying what a fantastic night they had and all in all it was a good show. Only thing that would have made it a great show for me was new material.
A good night out and if you like variety Brian Conley is the man for you!
