As we arrived at our seats in the main circle of the New Theatre in Cardiff we were greeted with an amazing sight, one that took my mother back to her childhood. A typical 50s based set of a radio station complete with DJ booth. We settled into our seats and watched the theatre fill, and fill, and fill.

The Buddy Holly Story takes us through the short rise to fame and untimely death of the Rock and Roll rebel. The comedy, the romance, the music, the loss – it’s all there and very real. The clingy mother, the true love, the friends all made it an excellent show to watch.

Buddy Holly himself was just like the legend – great guitarist with a cracking voice. I still don’t know who played him in Cardiff as it wasn’t obvious at all which is a shame really. Ritchie Vallans was a terrific dancer with a voice to match, the crickets complimented Buddy perfectly but the cellist was the star of the show for me – wow what a talent.

I was very impressed with the changing of the radio station and the most memorable scene was the Decca Records scene where he came up against some real race issues. The changing of scene to show the snow was truly, truly amazing, one of the best things I’ve seen in theatre – so simple yet so clever and so very sad.

I certainly wasn’t alone in enjoying the music, the whole cast came together to give a fantastic show and the whole audience was clapping, singing and having a fantastic evening. I also wasn’t alone in feeling the grief at the end, ok I knew what was coming as we all know about the terrible end of his life but wow, talk about an unforgettable scene. Go and see for yourself, you won’t forget it – ever!

I happily give this show 5 out of 5, I’m even going again this evening with my aunt!
