I have never booked through buyagift before, so when we received our voucher, I was immediately impressed with the presentation. If you were buying this as a gift, such as a Valentine’s gift, for someone, you wouldn’t have to worry about buying a box or anything to put the voucher in. It came in a lovely tin (this costs an extra £3.50), which I will reuse for some purpose, as it was too nice to discard.
The voucher is within the tin, with instructions regarding booking, which were straightforward enough. So I went to the buyagift website and searched for hotels in the not too far distance from our home in Dundee. I didn’t want to travel too far for a night, so came across a couple of hotels in Stirling. We did have the slight problem (or some call them a blessing) of 3 young children. So we weren’t able to go when originally planned. But I then contacted a couple of hotels I’d shortlisted to enquire about upgrading and bringing the children along with us. Both hotels were happy to accommodate this request for a small additional fee.
I picked the King Robert Hotel in Stirling, now here lies the tricky bit. We have 3 children, and this is often a problem when booking hotels, as most of them maximum is 2 adults plus 2 children in the room. The lady I dealt with via email said it would be fine to accommodate the children in the deal as well, for an extra £5 per head for age 5 and under (we have 5 year old twins) and £15 for age 6 and over. So £25 in total for our kids. Perfect.
We set off for the hotel later than I expected, so I gave them a quick call to enquire the bistro opening hours for food. She said last orders were 9pm. When we arrived, it was the same lady I’d spoken to on the phone, who was very welcoming and checked us in, giving us directions to our room and saying it was a lovely family room. Well she wasn’t exaggerating, when we opened the door to the room we were absolutely blown away with the size of it! 2 double beds and a single bed, with masses of space. Also, another folding bed in the walk-in wardrobe. I immediately had to take photos and share on Facebook, I knew any of my friends with more than 2 kids would fully appreciate just how awesome this room was. The kids were over joyed so much they even did cartwheels!
The room was very comfortable and quiet, it looked out over the Battle of Bannockburn site. No cars or anything going past. Dinner was included with the voucher. The menu was all the usual pub grub type favourites. All 3 children opted for the macaroni cheese, as did I, and my husband chose fish and chips. Meals were all served promptly and up to a good standard. Cleared plates all round. Dessert was ice cream for the children, my husband and myself both opted for vanilla cheesecake, which was absolutely beautifully presented with sauce and cape gooseberry (we had to ask what the fruit was).
Breakfast in the morning was served a short walk from our room, full continental selection of toast, cereal, yoghurt etc. Along with a hot help yourself full Scottish buffet, consisting of sausages, bacon, black pudding, haggis, potato scone, baked beans, chopped tomatoes and fried eggs. After setting ourselves up for the day with breakfast, we could barely look at food again till around 5pm. I did enquire about vegetarian sausages on the off chance they had some in the kitchen, but they’d run out. He did offer to get some in for me if we were staying another night, which was very nice. But I was satisfied enough with what I did have.
In summary, this hotel doesn’t look much from the photos online, but they really didn’t do the place any justice. We absolutely loved this hotel, the staff were all really nice, looking after us and humouring our rather spirited children as well, who were of course very excited.
We will definitely return to the King Robert hotel, and I would buy a voucher again even for ourselves, as it was an excellent deal with dinner and breakfast also included.
The buyagift website was very easy to use making the whole process very simple.
Full marks from the Young family!
