Caitlin Moran – How to be Famous at the Nottingham Playhouse Review

24 June 2018

Reviewed by Louise Edwards

I was thrilled to be at the first night of multi award-winning, bestselling author Caitlin Moran’s 5-night book tour to launch her latest novel “How to be Famous” held at the delightful Nottingham Playhouse.

The auditorium was packed with, mainly, ladies (and a few brave men) excited to hear what Caitlin had to say. We knew whatever that it would probably be rude, funny and irreverent but at the same time topical and touching. As we took our seats Caitlin’s Spotify “How to be Famous” list played in the background signifying the influences behind the book.

With the purchase price of the ticket, you get a signed copy of the book, which is released on 29 June 2018.

The stage was set with two chairs and interviewer Sandy Mahal introduced us to the format of the evening – Caitlin would read from her new book and answer questions from Sandy followed by opening the questions to the audience for Caitlin to answer.

Caitlin bounded onto stage with lots of energy and enthusiasm and the tone of the night was relaxed and fun. We listened and laughed together as Caitlin talked about themes within her latest book set in the halcyon days of Britpop – very much autobiographical account of sex, fame, love, London and more. The conversation was easy and entertaining with many issues relevant today as they were then. The #metoo campaign was discussed as Caitlin explained how she was writing her book just as the Weinstein scandal broke out.

The questioning then was handed over to the audience and the questions raised were so interesting and thought-provoking, touching on Love Island, mental health, feminism, libraries, education and body image. Caitlin gave intelligent and witty responses with her no-nonsense advice and wisdom based on her own experiences. I was genuinely gutted when the time was up – we could have listened and chatted all night!

The audience then had the opportunity to buy more books by Caitlin for her to sign, take a selfie with her or just say hello. The evening was refreshing and entertaining and over far too quickly but then again I think we all wanted to rush home to start reading our new book! If you get the opportunity to catch Caitlin on her tour then grab it and have fun and if not then buy the book – you won’t be disappointed.
