Background:
I was invited to review this unique idea of a Family Craft Club. A fee of £5 per week is paid in a subscription in return for a free gift upon sign up and weekly craft activities sent direct to your inbox. The main concept of this craft club is to have something crafty to entertain your children throughout the summer holidays. You are invited to visit the craft club website and upload pictures of your creations as part of competitions too.

What we received:
Our free gift was a handmade drawstring bag with our daughters name emblazoned across it in felt stickers, alongside the family craft club logo.

The craft activity we were sent consisted of instructions on how to make your own “baked beans on toast” dinner plate out of tissue paper, a sponge and a paper plate. It gave easy to follow instructions on how to paint a sponge to create toast and how to make baked beans out of tissue paper, paint etc… with a follow up suggestion of trying a whole cooked breakfast effect.

What we thought:
Our daughter was pleased with her free gift as it was personalised to her. We have not found a use for it yet but imagine if we had an ongoing subscription to the craft club we could store craft materials in it for quick access.

The instructions we received were simple and straightforward and the idea also as simple. We did “have a go” at making the breakfast plate as suggested, and the children did really enjoy it of course, but they are both pre-schoolers and I wonder if this would therefore be suitable for children who are older than 7 or 8 as it is pretty basic an idea. That said, the simplest ideas are usually the greatest and who knows what the further subscription weeks could bring!

Value for money wise – I’d agree that £5 is not too much an expense to pay out generally, however to pay for that in return for an email of a craft suggestion, in addition with the cost to then buy the materials, I feel in return for a basic craft idea it is a higher cost to pay than that you would spend in buying a full children’s craft magazine from a local shop, which is often full of lots of craft ideas, stories and sometimes the main materials are inclusive. I also feel that the internet is open to lots of free craft ideas just by a simple search engine look up and therefore I personally wouldn’t subscribe to this service as I am well accustomed to search engine use and couldn’t justify the fee for someone else to send me an email.

Our overall opinion – simple, fun idea, easy to follow and convenient but not for us as I feel I could find a similar idea elsewhere for free or get more for my money. That said, for a busy family who wants a quick fix once a week, this could be ideal and I’m sure many would pay for the convenience alone of a quick craft suggestion. Obviously you would still then have to shop for any extra materials you didn’t have to hand within your home but maybe this is something the craft club could offer. I feel if some of the materials were part of the package, then it would entice more subscribers and provide more value for money.

3 out of 5 – OK. A great idea in principal but feel it needs something extra to be worth the spend.
