On Saturday (24 March 2018) my family and I visited St Helens Theatre Royal for their Easter pantomime, Cinderella. As a family we have visited the Theatre Royal panto many, many times so we knew we were in for an enjoyable experience but this show was extra special as it was the first time we had taken our 1 year old with us.

Anyone familiar with panto know that it is tradition to have a celebrity playing one of the main roles and this pantomime was no different, with Lee Latchford-Evans from Steps playing Prince Charming. Often these celebrity performances can be quite wooden and obviously relying on the performers name rather than the talent but this couldn’t have been further from the truth with Lee Latchford-Evans. His performance as Prince Charming was superb and, as expected, his songs were brilliant.

My eldest daughter’s favourite character was Buttons played by Lewis Devine, she thought he was hilarious and whilst I didn’t share her enthusiasm for this character it was wonderful to see her giggling away. For me though it was the Ugly Step-sisters, Kylie and Kendall, played by Mark Newell and resident dame Si Foster who really carried the show. We have seen Si Foster, who also co wrote this show, in countless pantomimes at St Helens and he never disappoints. He has that wonderful talent of making both adults and children laugh out loud with his cheeky jokes.

My daughter’s were mesmerized from the moment the show began right until the end. The lights, music and dancing were enough to keep the one year old transfixed whilst my five year old loved all the costumes. Both the girls loved it when the real Shetland ponies appeared on stage, particularly Trevor the talking pony! As a long time Steps fan I was made up with the Steps Medley performed by the whole cast at the end of the show.

This is a great show for the whole family and a perfect activity to keep everyone happy over the Easter holidays. To miss this magical pantomime would indeed be a tragedy!
