Coolcasc are a really fun idea. They are an outer cover for a helmet to turn it in to one of many choices of animal. Their website is really simple to use and clearly displays all the designs. When you click on to the individual design I love that there is a picture of each design in use on a helmet of a child or adult to show what they look like in real life rather than just on sales photos and not in use. I chose an iguana design as I liked the look of the tail hanging down the back as well as the spikes along the top. I must admit that I found it hard to choose a design as there were so many that looked really good!
The product arrived in its outer packaging, which is a sleeve that matches the design chosen and provides the basic details in a variety of languages. I have to confess that I don’t ski, or know many people that do, so my intention was always to see the product on a bike helmet even though the website pictures are on ski helmets. As such, I was a little sceptical of the claim that their product will fit any kind of helmet. I was also slightly concerned about their one size fits all claim. However, I had nothing to worry about. The item really is very stretchy and works really well on all sizes of bike helmet. It has been tried on those that fit an adult, and also 7, 5 and 3-year-old sized helmets and fits all of them really well (it’s also been directly on the heads of the 7, 5 and 3-year-old and paraded around the house, but that’s another story!). The spikes and tail of the iguana design are all in fleece which is stuffed to help it stay in shape.
This product is much better than having a novelty helmet, which will be outgrown. It means that you can buy a standard product in a basic colour and jazz it up with one of these. If you have more than one child (or adult) then you can buy a variety. You are also able to have more than one design per person to enable a bit more choice or for those who like to colour co-ordinate the animal on their head with their outfit when out and about! Due to their ‘one size fits all’ approach they won’t be outgrown either so there isn’t a specific timeframe for use of them as they’ll continue to fit even when helmets need changing.
Another great benefit of these it that they are machine washable (at 30 degrees) so, if they get dirty they can just be whipped off and thrown in the machine. As they are lightweight they would be quick drying.
These would make a great gift for both adults and children. I have seen bikers (on motorbikes) with ears on their helmets but would love to see some of these designs when one goes past me on the road. I would also love to see families with them when out cycling with my own family. As I have 3 children and currently only one cover I shall be buying 2 more so they each have one for when we are out… I’m tempted to get one for myself too.
All in all, they’re quite a simple idea but are really fun and I love the number of different designs that they come in and the versatility of options for use on nearly any type of helmet. They aren’t a necessary item but it’s much more fun to have one than not to. They would make a great novelty gift for someone, particularly someone who is hard to buy for.
