I have been using Edifier speakers for a number of years and am a big fan. They have always been stylish, excellent quality and superb sound. The S880DB bookshelf speakers I was recently sent to review are no exception. The S880DB are the first Hi-Res Audio Certified speakers from Edifier and also feature Four EQ Modes with a Titanium-laminate dome treble driver.
They look very stylish with their white body and light wooden sides. They stand approx. 24cm high, approx. 12cm wide and 18cm deep so don’t take up an enormous amount of space on the shelf or desk.
They come with a whole host of connectivity options; RCA, AUX, USB, optical, coaxial, and Bluetooth 4.1. With so many options it is extremely easy to connect them to laptops/desktop computers, phones, tablets or even gaming consoles.
Once connected, they produce a rich sound with no distortion (even at the highest levels). They are active speakers (built in amp) and have a power output of R/L (treble): 12W+12W, R/L (deep bass): 32W+32W. They also feature XMOS Digital Audio Processor if you use the USB as a connection for your laptop etc.
The volume, treble and bass control knobs are on the rear, but the speakers can be controlled by remote control. The supplied remote control is quite funky, it’s round! It sits quite nicely on the desk and is quite weighty despite its size and features the standard on/off, source, play/pause, volume and forward/backward buttons along with buttons for dynamic, monitor, classic and vocal preset EQ settings so you can easily change depending on what type of audio you want to listen to.
Overall, the Edifier S8880DB active bookshelf speakers look and sound like premium speakers and I think, although priced at around £260, are a worthy investment if you like quality sound and build. Very impressive.
