We visited Chesters Roman Fort and Museum on 10 April 2015 and what a fantastic day we had as a family.

We arrived at 11.30am, it was very well sign posted and easy to find. Car parking costs £3 but is refunded when you pay for entry (the guy explained this was due to not owning the land and people parked there to walk along Hadrian’s Wall). From the moment we walked in the staff couldn’t have been more helpful, they were polite, chatty and involved the kids in explaining where things were and what there was to do.

We first visited the tearoom which has only been open 2 weeks, there was ample seating outside on picnic benches and a few tables inside. Again the staff in there we very helpful and smiley.

The one downside to it was the price, in my opinion £3.95 for a tuna sandwich, £1 for a bag of crisps and £1.35 for a juice is quite steep and there is no kids menu/option.

We then headed to see the wall, I had been told the grass had been cut so it would be easily accessible with the buggy but I found it quite difficult and ended up using the baby carrier I’d also brought. I don’t think it would be suitable for any wheelchair access.

My 6 year old found the ruins really interesting and loved reading the plaques posted next to each site and learning what they had been used for. It was really educational and fun at the same time. My 2 year old found it a really exciting climbing frame!!

There is a beautiful spot for a picnic down past the roman baths where you can sit at the riverside.

The museum was a lot smaller than expected with only 2 rooms, but had a fantastic array of artefacts including weapons, pots and milestones.

And the highlight of my 6 year olds day was having his picture taken with an original roman sword as we left.

I would definitely visit again but maybe for one on one time with the older kids as I felt the 2 year old just didn’t understand it enough. But all in all a great day out.
