Book and Toy Set

Esio Trot (tortoise spelled backwards) by the world’s greatest storyteller, Roald Dahl, is a love story about neighbours Mr Hoppy and Mrs Silver. Mr Hoppy is very shy so does not declare his secret love but soon comes up with a plan to win the heart of Mrs Silver.
Mrs Silver lives in the flat below Mr Hoppy with her pet tortoise, Alfie, on her balcony. One day Mrs Silver wishes than Alfie would grow a bit faster and Mr Hoppy gives her some magic words that will double Alfie’s size in 2 months. He now has to hatch a plan with the aid of a tortoise catcher to make this happen and win Mrs Silver’s affections. But will he be able to do it and will they live happily ever after?
Overall Esio Trot is a great, simple story that children will love and is very well illustrated by Quentin Blake. A love story inspired by Alfie the tortoise.
On the downside, as an adult, I find that it sends the wrong message about a lonely man stealing his neighbour’s pet and replacing it with others to trick her into marrying him. So while the story has a happening ending the method used to get there I find very wrong.
This box set also comes with a toy tortoise and the box set would make a lovely gift set and both the book and toy are perfect for small hands.
