Feed Your Family for £70 a Week Challenge with Aldi Review

Reviewed by Debbie Talbot

I have really been enjoying this challenge as shopping for a family of 5 can work out so expensive. This week I was determined to come in well under budget and plan the week in advance. I also wanted to be mindful of the fact that I am following a healthy eating plan at the moment. I found everything I needed very easily within the store and came out with £48.89 of shopping. I was delighted that so much of it was fresh fruit and vegetables. My family eating healthy is extremely important to me as I have had weight issues for a number of years.

I bought 5% fat beef mince, rump steak and chicken drumsticks and thighs as I decided to not eat meat for every meal. The meat came to under £10 which I was delighted about. I also got two large deep pan cheese pizzas for a bargain 89p each.

Fruit wise I went for apples, grapes, pears and bananas. The fresh vegetables I bought were potatoes, large red onions, tomatoes, mushrooms and mixed peppers. I bought spread, milk and two types of bread as well as some cooking mixes to make life easier as life as a working twin mum is hugely hectic in the week.

I then got other store cupboard items such as spaghetti hoops, eggs, baked beans, crisp type snacks, ravioli and ketchup. Having toddler twins, 3 lots of pull ups and some packs of baby wipes were also purchased.

Our meals during the week were egg, beans and chips, chilli con carne, pizza & chips, chicken casserole, rump steak and chips from what I purchased. We did eat out a couple of evenings. Breakfasts were a mix of cereal, egg, spaghetti hoops and beans on toast. My twins have a hot meal at school and my daughter took a packed lunch. The other adult in our household takes sandwiches made from the sandwich ham. I tend to have bruschetta or something on toast.

In summary, I came in well under budget this week, even after a small top up shop of milk, bread, fruit and veg later in the week and including pull ups and wipes for twins. You can eat very healthily and well for under £70 a week (for a family of 5) when shopping at ALDI.
