Me and a friend attended the opening night of Flashdance – The Musical that was showing at the Kings Theatre in Portsmouth. We found local parking in one of the side streets but apparently you can also park in the local Waitrose car park after 6pm, which is a short walk away.
The show is based on the hit 1980s film Flashdance and mirrors the storyline of the film quite closely, so fans of the film won’t be disappointed. The story follows young Alex, who is a 25-year-old welder, who also dances in a club in the evening and dreams of getting into a dance school even though she lacks qualifications. The story also follows Alex and her friend’s highs and lows of love and life working in the club. Right from the beginning the show was fast paced going from song to song with exciting dance routines that are captivating and flawless with so much energy they were fun and thrilling to watch. There is no doubt that Joanne Clifton, who plays Alex, is a complete show stealer, she was so energetic and executed all the dance routines perfectly. As for the singing the standout actor for me was Ben Adams, who plays Nick Hurley, there were a few songs where he had a huge singing part of which was sung brilliantly.
There were many moments that stood out a couple of being some of the big songs like Maniac and Gloria from act one. The end of the show was amazing where they performed several of the songs and dances to finish.
We had a fabulous night and thoroughly enjoyed the show. I would definitely recommend this show to anyone. This was our first visit to the Kings Theatre and as we stepped inside we were amazed at the beautiful building, there were also lots of friendly helpful staff around to help you find your seat. We were very impressed by our first visit to this theatre and can’t wait to visit again soon.
Tickets cost from £14 to £38 (booking fees may apply).
