Last night we visited Frankie & Benny’s at Walton-le-Dale to try out their new menu. The restaurant was really easy to find and is just on the outskirts of Preston, there is a large car park and it is situated next to a cinema so it is the perfect destination for a treat with the children or for meeting a group of friends.

When we arrived we were quickly shown to our table, asked which drinks we would like and given menus and a children’s activity pack for our son. The restaurant was reasonably busy considering it was a Monday evening and the service was excellent. There was a really vibrant atmosphere in the restaurant and looking around everyone seemed to be having a good time.

Their great value menu offers a massive range of starters, main courses, sides and desserts. There was so much choice it took us a while to decide what to eat as it all sounded delicious! After a lot of deliberation we decided just to share a garlic bread to start as the main courses sounded quite filling and we were glad we had made this decision once we saw the size of the mains!

Luke who is 9 chose his food from the Junior’s menu which costs £7.75 for a main course, side, dessert and unlimited soft drinks. He decided on a Build-a-Burger and enjoyed choosing what to put on it. He could choose between beef or chicken, a choice of three sauces and then order as many of the toppings as he wanted. He settled on a beef burger with bacon and cheese and it was served with fries, a pot of ketchup and baked beans.

Frankie & Benny’s are the only restaurant that I have come across that recognise that children eat different amounts so as well as the Junior menu there is a Kid’s menu costing just £4.25.

I finally decided on the New Jersey chicken which cost £14.95. The description of chicken breast topped with streaky bacon, pulled pork, BBQ and cheese sauces and served with crispy onion rings, golden fries, coleslaw and corn on the cob sounded mouth-watering and I wasn’t disappointed. My only criticism was that the onion ring wasn’t a homemade one which I would have expected with a meal costing £14.95. My husband chose a real plateful – BBQ Chicken and Ribs at £15.95. This consisted of half a roasted chicken and a half rack of ribs, smothered in BBQ sauce with fries, coleslaw and corn on the cob. I think for the first time ever he was the last to clear his plate and really enjoyed his meal. Our older son, a fan of pizza chose to eat a Calzone pizza for £11.45, stuffed with beef and pork meatballs, pepperoni and mozzarella. He really tucked in and was pleased with his choice.

The waiter was attentive without being annoying and kept checking how we were doing and offering to get more drinks. We were all too full for pudding but Luke had been looking forward to  the ice cream Candy Shop all day so there was no way that he was missing that! The ice cream arrives in a dish on a wooden crate with mini milk bottle style jars containing jelly tots, mini smarties and a chocolate sprinkle sweet. There was also a small dish of mini marshmallows, a packet of popping candy and a small pot of chocolate sauce. There were a lot of sweets for the two scoops of ice cream but there was also a paper bag to put the extra sweets in so once he had finished his ice cream he put the sweets in the bag and brought them home. The ice cream Candy Shop was an extra £1.95 on top of the normal children’s menu which wasn’t bad value at all.

We all had a lovely evening out, the food was tasty and the portions generous. We will certainly be returning!

Rating: 4.5/5
