Frankie & Benny’s Uttoxeter Review

Reviewed by Debbie Lowndes

Well my family and I love food and eating out whenever we get the opportunity. We were delighted to have the opportunity to complete a family review at Frankie & Benny’s in Uttoxeter. Frankie & Benny’s is an American/Italian style restaurant. Upon entering the restaurant the atmosphere was welcoming, we were welcomed as we entered. We were immediately lead to a reserved table. We have only visited Frankie & Benny’s once before and this was the one at Derby restaurant. The restaurant has recently introduced a new menu therefore the purpose of this visit was to review the new menu.

We arrived at 7.30pm, our table was booked for 7.30 to 8.00. Once we were seated at the table we were asked if we wished to order a drink. There were four of us my husband, my daughter, her friend (both 14) and myself. Whilst they sorted our drinks we took the time to study the menu. It was explained to us that there were 83 new dishes on the menu. There were notes on the menu to advised that there has been a change to the oil they use to cook the food with.

The menu offers a wide selection of dishes with a variety of breads and starters, many Pizzas and Calzones, pasta dishes, meat dishes, a range of 100% beef burgers, fish dishes, chicken dishes, the healthy option of salads and an assortment of side dishes. The menu layout was attractive and easy to follow. The waitress asked if we want some garlic dough balls or garlic bread as a starter. We selected garlic dough balls. Whilst we were waiting for the starter to arrive we made our selection from the menu.

The dough balls arrived quickly and these were delicious. My husband ordered Spaghetti Bolognese (spaghetti with Cousin Mario’s bolognese sauce), I optioned for Calazone, which is a folded pizza (New Yorker – spicy pepperoni, ham, bacon, mushrooms and mozzarella, with Mamma’s rich Neapolitan sauce), the two girls choose from the Juniors menu, my daughter had chicken pasta (penne pasta and grilled fresh chicken breast pieces, with your choice of tasty Neapolitan or creamy cheese sauce. Served with toasted garlic ciabatta and your choice of vegetables, baked beans or salad) and my daughter’s friend optioned to build a burger with fries (served in a warm bun with golden fries, a pot of ketchup, and your choice of sauce and toppings – as many as you like! Choose from mayo, BBQ sauce or ketchup sauces and baby gem lettuce, cheese, tomato, pineapple and bacon toppings. Then pick a free side order of vegetables, baked beans or salad). The food arrived promptly, mine was very nice but was cold in parts. However, it was jam packed with meat and cheese.  My husband’s was warm but the portion was a little on the small size. My daughter’s portion was a good size for a junior meal and came with two pieces of garlic bread. Her friend’s choice was disappointing, the burger was a midget double burger with very few fries. They both advised the food was nice though.

After the mains we all optioned for dessert, my favourite part! The dessert menu offered a huge choice. I could not make my mind up between Eli’s Tiramisu or the Blueberry Eton Mess sundae, I optioned for the sundae. My husband also choose a sundae, the fudge brownie one. My daughter had a chocolate pancake and her friend had brownies and ice cream. We also ordered two milkshakes at this point as my daughter had spotted the promotion flyer on the table detailing these and she mentioned them throughout the meal.  My daughter tried the choca-nana flavour and her friend tried the chocolate one. My daughter’s definitely tasted of banana and she thoroughly enjoyed this, her friend’s again was not as expected, it was not very chocolaty, it seemed to be mainly filled with cream. Her brownies made up for this and she really enjoyed those. We all enjoyed the desserts, I have to say this was the best part for me.

Overall the food was average, nothing special, but we did have a great time. The staff were professional and catered for our every need. We had a nice dining experience, but I do have to say that I have had better food at considerably less money. However, the environment and menu selection is great.

I would rate the food at 3 out of 5, maybe we picked bad dishes. The environment, staff and cleanliness 5 out of 5.

Rating: 4/5
