This is the latest special edition Monopoly game to be released and is based on the massively successful TV show Game of Thrones. I was very excited to try this out as it combines two of my favourite things.
I should make it clear that this is not the edition which comes with weathered dice and a scroll – that is another edition and more expensive. This box looks appealing; it is black with lovely lettering and bold pictures. Once you get inside the board has been very well thought out and has various place of interest such as Crastor’s Keep (which in the original is Old Kent Road) so you get the idea. My only complaint is that the board still has the “go to jail”, “Jail” and “free parking” squares. These have not been changed and I presume it is to keep the essence of the original game but I feel it lets the board down enormously. I am sure someone could have come up with something more in line with the TV show. The dice are just the normal dice you would use in any board game but the houses and hotels have been replaced by Custom Villages and Keeps. The cash is printed on quite thin paper but the artwork at least in the theme of Game of Thrones. The play pieces are well thought out with a white walker, crown, dragon egg, dire wolf, the iron throne and the three-eyed raven and are quite substantially made. They have renamed the Chance and Community Chest cards, Valar Morghulis and The Iron Throne. The cards are kind of the same as the original game with a few quotes thrown in.
In summary the object of the game and the rules remain unaltered and I think this restricts what changes they can make to the original game. This edition is good fun for a Game of Thrones fan and I am sure I will play it quite a bit.
Suitable for 2-6 players, adults only (age 18+).
