I’d received a Traditional Afternoon Tea for Two voucher from Getting Personal, the website that offers a large range of gifts and personalised gifts. The voucher was redeemable at many locations throughout the UK. I chose to go to Orestone Manor in Maidencombe near Torquay in Devon as I was on holiday visiting my parents in nearby Bovey Tracey and we thought it’d be a treat for us and my two year old daughter.

Orestone Manor is tucked down a country lane and in a beautiful setting with gorgeous grounds and far reaching views out over Torbay.

We’d spent the day at the zoo and due to lack of knowledge of the local roads we arrived 30 minutes early for our booking. This wasn’t a problem and our table was swiftly made up and a highchair presented for our little Miss.

The restaurant had a beautiful sea view and the decor inside complimented the surroundings.

I was really pleased to see we could have coffee with our afternoon tea (and decaf too) and both my Dad and I enjoyed our individual pots of coffee served with a jug of hot milk. My Mum was similarly impressed with her large teapot (with real leaf tea) and pot of hot water which lasted for ever!

Despite the original swift service and quick arrival of our drinks we were disappointed in the 40 minute wait for food. There were only two other tables being served (whom I assume had also booked) and as we were all having afternoon tea we couldn’t understand what the delay was.

Once the food arrived we weren’t disappointed with the selection; egg & cress, salmon & cucumber, ham & tomato and coronation chicken sandwiches were served on brown and white bread, an assortment of cakes and huge, melt in your mouth scones served with proper Devon clotted cream. Even with my toddler helping out on the cakes we weren’t able to finish it all.

I’d like to think we caught the kitchen on a bad day and if I had a special occasion to celebrate I would definitely think of visiting again. The afternoon tea for two people at £34.99 is good value.

As a side note the hotel could do with providing baby changing facilities. They didn’t have any but I was told I was “welcome to use the disabled toilet”. This meant I could change my daughter’s nappy on the floor! At least it was carpeted!
