Ghost the Musical at the King’s Theatre Glasgow Review

Reviewed by Lorna Templeton

Romance, tragedy, comedy and intrigue. Bill Kenwright’s production of Ghost the Musical has all of this and more. There was no apparent opening night nerves as Andy Moss, former Hollyoaks heartthrob Rhys Ashworth, and Carolyn Maitland, West End starlet, play Sam and Molly. The pair make for an engaging couple on stage and the infamous pottery wheel scene was both sizzling hot and then tear-jerking all at the same time!

Given Ghost the Musical is Andy’s first time on the professional stage as part of a big production his voice was powerful, strong and his stage presence wowed the audience at the opening night in Glasgow! We all know how amazing Patrick Swayze played the original character of Sam, and those are pretty big shoes to fill, but Andy as Sam was just as captivating to watch. He definitely captured our hearts. And Carolyn Maitland had the audience spellbound with her heart-wrenching portrayal of Molly. She was pure and enthralling and has us all aching for Sam alongside her.

The story, though changed for the stage, follows the original as Molly and Sam move into a Brooklyn apartment together. Their lives come hurtling to a halt when Sam is fatally wounded following a robbery. However, unbeknown to Molly, Sam has become a ghost and finds out he was set up by his friend and colleague. Sam has to learn quickly how to exist as ghost and protect Molly from the danger she is in.

It is at this point the character of Oda Mae, played by West End musical theatre star Jacqui Dubois, joins the stage bringing with her a comedic twist. After a life of fraudulent activity, she finally inherits her family’s gift for communicating with the dead when the ghost of Sam arrives and convinces her to get his message of warning and love across to Molly. It is her flamboyant character and show stopping songs that win her the biggest cheers at the curtain call at Glasgow Kings Theatre.

Overall Ghost the Musical had us all enthralled from start to finish! An amazing show with an equally amazing cast, what’s not to love? Just don’t forget the tissues, it’s an emotional ride!
