A friend and I went for a three course meal at Giraffe in Bluewater, Kent. Situated at the back of the Wintergarden lower floor, it was newly furnished in 2012 and is clean and welcoming overlooking the boating lake. We went at 6pm midweek and the whole complex was quite quiet but the restaurant, which is on two floors was probably about half full on the first floor. It has its own facilities, i.e. its own toilets, particularly useful for people lazy like us and for those with children. For those of us of a certain age the Beano pages adorning the toilet walls are of amusement. However, why they are behind the toilet and not on the side walls or the back of the toilet I don’t know. Bit of a shame really, perhaps designed by a narrow minded man?!
The menu was extensive and has something for everyone. The house wine was good and better than many a house wine in a similar eatery.
We both had the crunchy prawns with sweet chilli sauce to start. The prawns were good and there was a generous helping of the sauce. My friend had a medium sirloin steak with chips cooked perfectly with again a very generous helping of separate peppercorn sauce. I had the chorizio sausage with cream and cheese carbonara which was gorgeous and I love my pasta. The garlic focaccia as a side which was okay. I personally like loads of garlic but it would be fine for most people.
Although quite full we left some chips and bread to enable dessert consumption! I had the Rocky Road Sundae. I am a chocoholic and often I find you get too much brownie and it ends up being too heavy and a waste. However, the portion of brownie and marshmallow was the right size to compliment the ice cream. My friend had the Tiramisu Sundae the balance of the different ingredients just right.
Service was timely. We didn’t feel rushed and nor did we feel we were waiting too long for anything. Staff were very smile, made recommendations and attentive without being obtrusive. For example, noticing when ice had melted in the water and offering a doggy bag to take home the unfinished wine. We noticed other people’s food which all looked of a high standard and was clearly cooked freshly on the premises and served promptly. We also noticed all the staff provided the same high level of service to all the tables.
We would thoroughly recommend the restaurant and will certainly be returning on our next shopping visit!
