I went to the Lyceum Theatre in Sheffield last night and was lucky enough to see the musical Guys and Dolls starring Richard Fleeshman, Maxwell Caulfield and Louise Dearman. The theatre was full and had great atmosphere. Parking was expensive close by but a short 10 minute walk away behind the cathedral, all night parking for £1 could be found… bonus!

I had never seen the show before and I didn’t know much about it, but it has been nominated for six Olivier Awards.

Guys and Dolls is set in New York and is a love story between an unlikely pairing, revolving around Sky Masterson (Richard Fleeshman (Coronation Street; Ghost – The Musical)) – a gambling addict and Sarah – a Salvation Army lady running a local mission. The story is told well with amazing scenery helping to paint the right picture. The story is told through speaking parts and through singing, some songs I’d not heard before but all were well sung by each character, some were more well-known but all had a wow factor and got great applause from the audience. It featured songs Luck Be a Lady, I’ve Never Been in Love Before and Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat. The dances were well choreographed and mesmerising at times.

The only minor thing was I did sometimes struggle to hear the performers speaking parts and the orchestra was very loud… a few sound issues that can be easily resolved so hopefully are limited to the opening night performance.

The Guys and Dolls stage show is from the London’s West End and is a tale of gangsters, gambling and nightclub singers. Highly recommend for a great night with a comedy side, making for a fun evening.
