We attended the Princess Theatre in Torquay to see the TOPS Musical Productions of Hairspray. There are a large number of available car parks in the vicinity of the theatre but you should allow plenty of time to park before any show. The appearance of the theatre is bright and white, based on the seafront so boasts great views, in a great area. The theatre has a great atmosphere, and the 2 level bar/cafe is a good place to wait before a show, when you can order a bite to eat. All staff we encountered were polite, friendly and helpful.

Hairspray is a big bold musical set in the 60s, around the time when racial segregation was coming to an end. The story is light-hearted but does address the feelings of the time, where black was not considered by some to be as good as white. The story follows Tracey and her journey from schoolgirl to TV star. It is packed full of song and dance from beginning to end.

I really enjoyed this show. I realised part way through that the film is adapted from the stageshow therefore the storyline is fairly different although the underlying feeling is the same, and there are a number of additional numbers included that I wasn’t familiar with. The cast clearly tried very hard to put on a great show and were really enjoying themselves. Some American accents were better than others, it must be said (as with the singing) but this did not detract too much from the overall enjoyment of the show.

There were comedy moments (the odd moment when I even cried with laughter!), songs and dance packed into this show.

I took my 5 year old daughter with me too the show – she also enjoyed it but the themes went over her head somewhat although we thoroughly enjoyed the show.

I would absolutely recommend seeing this show.

Rating: 5/5 thumbs_up
