“You can’t stop the beat!” – that’s exactly how I felt after the show last night! Everyone has heard this catchy song and that’s the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear “Hairspray”!
The show is set in 1962 in Baltimore and based around a very famous teen contest “The Corny Collins Show” where dancers introduce the audience to the getting ever so popular rock and roll movement at that time. It exposes the problem of race segregation, when it was only white, slim and pretty teenagers appearing on the show.
A young girl Tracy Turnblad is dreaming to be a part of the show, but when she goes for the auditions, she’s told she does not fit the standards as she’s slightly overweight, despite having an amazing voice. At the auditions, Tracy meets one of the starts of the show, Link, who is able to see Tracy’s real talent and inner beauty of her personality.
“Hairspray” is a wonderful show with amazingly talented actors! The voices and dancing are superb! Despite tackling serious society issues of the time, it is easy to watch and absolutely enjoyable. It teaches good morals and shows that a real talent will break through the barriers.
Absolutely loved everything about the show! The actors, the costumes and, of course, the hairstyles (they alone are worth coming along to see the show)! If you happen to be a lucky one and get hold of a ticket to see “Hairspray”, you are in for a treat! Totally worth it!
Tickets cost from £23.90 to £53.90 (plus £4 transaction fee).
