Half Breed at the Theatre Royal Plymouth Review

5-9 June 2018

This show was performed in The Drum of the Theatre Royal in Plymouth. This room allows for a much more intimate and engaging performance, and Natasha really used this to her advantage throughout her performance in Half Breed. The lighting arrangements were beautiful, and the changes were subtle, yet incredibly effective.

Half Breed goes through the upbringing of a mixed raced girl in a small-minded West Country village. The tale of events leading up to her standing up for herself and making a life for herself is gripping and emotionally investing. She engages the audience throughout and, at points, had us all in stitches of laughter.

Natasha performed this narrative solo, performing the perspectives of 4 main characters as well as background characters using changes of accents and body language. These transitions are clear and a skill to be truly applauded. Her story takes places over a mere few days, but the story she tells includes several dimensions of occurrences that can really affect a person, things that many people will have experienced but things that are not so readily spoken about, particularly in the theatre environment. Topics such as racism, mental health, physical well-being, domestic violence, emotional abuse, exploring sexualities, and so on. Her ability to display these areas of life and her raw emotion is an incredibly powerful and moving watch.

I would highly recommend viewing Half Breed, it highlights everyday topics and conversations and exploits the affects certain words and actions can have on individuals. It is an incredible and eye-opening performance, and there should be more of such shows in the theatre.

Natasha Marshall is an exhilarating, influential performer and her voice is ready to be heard by everyone.
