I was lucky enough to be given a Gefu Blobby Egg Separator from Haus to try this week. It is a very interesting looking device resembling a light bulb but made up of plastic and a very thin silicone. You squeeze air out of the silicone bulb place the plastic spout on top of the yolk and release to pull up the yolk and leave the white.
My daughter and I decided to have a try on an older egg we had in the kitchen before using it to separate eggs for cooking. The blobby initially worked well but when lifting the separator up the yolk split and ran back out of the utensil and into the white. Knowing the egg was a week or so old we decided to go and get some fresh eggs and see if it made a difference.
When used with new fresh eggs the blobby worked exceptionally well, we played with one egg lifting and replacing the yolk around 6 times and there was no breakage or damage to the yolk.
The blobby is available from Haus and is priced at £7. I believe this is not a bad price if you are purchasing as a fun gift, or for someone who makes a lot of separated egg goodies as this would be a good time saving device.
While I understand the need for using quality ingredients and know this would minimize any breakages I do wonder if there is anything that could be done to tweak the design making it easier to use on older eggs too.
I give this product 3.5/5 purely because of its poorer performance on the older eggs but find it a very cool, fun, kitchen toy to have.
Available to buy from Haus here.
