An Officer and a Gentleman at Milton Keynes Theatre Review

9-14 July 2018

We arrived at Milton Keynes Theatre last night (Monday 9th July) to watch the new musical An Officer and a Gentleman. This is a new show based on the iconic film from the 1980’s. This being one of my most favourite films I had been eagerly awaiting the show for some months to arrive in Milton Keynes.

It was not to disappoint. The cast have a truly amazing set of voices. Emma Williams who played Paula was a standout as Paula along with Jonny Fines as Zack. Rachel Stanley as Paula’s mum, Esther has an outstanding vocal.

For those whom the original film passed by the story is of two young men from vastly different backgrounds who join the Navy and their journey through the twelve weeks of Officer Candidates School. They meet Paula and Lynette, and so the story of life unfolds.

The show depicts well the grit and determination of the Officers who need to survive their training, whilst their growing love for the women in their lives unravels. The couples fight to establish their careers and their love for each other.

Several songs are from the original film, although standout for me were ‘I want to know what Love is’, ‘Heart of Glass’ and ‘Toy Soldiers’. The singing standard throughout the show is amazing. The set is simple and compliments the story. I loved the waves breaking in the background of Zack’s bedroom patio doors as a backdrop to Paula and Zack’s romantic encounter.

For me, the blockbuster moment was the ending and I truly wasn’t disappointed, it bought tears to my eyes. I still live in hope my man will one day sweep me off my feet, carry me away and love me forever. All dressed in a white Navy Officer uniform with Up Where We Belong blaring from the speakers… isn’t that every girls dream? Stunning ending loved it, well done to everyone, I had a fabulous time.
