I took three very excited children, aged 5, 5 and 6 to see Hugless Douglas at The Kings Theatre in Southsea, Portsmouth. The show was performed by Blunderbus Children’s Theatre Company and combined music, acting, mime and puppetry. We were welcomed in to the theatre by two of the actors who spoke to the children in the audience. My three were overjoyed when it was their turn and chattered away happily!
The show itself was true to the style of the ever popular Hugless Douglas books by David Melling. The cast consisted of three actors, two who played various parts and of course the adorable Douglas! The cast created an atmosphere that took us away on a journey searching for the ‘perfect hug’. The set was simple yet effective and the props worked so well and really made the journey come to life. There was plenty of audience participation and lots of cheeky giggles from my three at various points. From an adults perspective this was an enchanting performance that told a simple tale in a beautiful way, a fantastic cast with great skills – it really didn’t feel as if there was only three of them. From a child’s perspective it was a funny show that everyone should go and see! The children loved the audience participation, especially the songs and all three were spellbound when Douglas managed to find his perfect hug with his Mummy.
All 4 of us really enjoyed this show and I would definitely recommend those with boys or girls aged 4 – 7 to see this.
At fabulous touch at the end was a meet and greet with Douglas… My three were first in the queue!
