If I Knew You Were Coming Baking Subscription Kits Review

Over the last year, I’ve been working my way through various online meal recipe kits that come with ingredients and a recipe card on a subscription service.

When I was given the chance to review a baking subscription kit, I was really intrigued to see how the market could be extended to baking.

If I Knew You Were Coming offer a subscription of kits to make either brownies, muffins or cookies, as well as one-off boxes. You can choose to have a 3, 6 or 12 month subscription, with a box sent out every month.

I was sent the Classic Chocolate Brownie kit and the White Chocolate and Cranberry Cookie kit to try out. The kits arrived in simple but pleasing cardboard boxes, and each contained a recipe card and all the dry ingredients needed in individual paper packets – I just needed eggs and butter.

I have recently subscribed to meal recipe kits to get out of the rut of the same meals and try something different. I have to say, the appeal for these baking kits is different – the ingredients aren’t anything out of the ordinary, but the convenience is the main appeal. Everything is right there – usually I have to search for a recipe, then Google for the millionth time what the difference is between baking powder and bicarbonate of soda, then change all the amounts because I’ve only got half the flour needed, then measure everything in the right order so I don’t create ten bowls of washing-up, then realise I’ve run out of brown sugar, and then decide to just leave it and open the custard creams instead.

My 3-year-old daughter adores baking, loves following instructions, and eating cake, so this was an activity she could really get involved with. For the cookie kit, we invited some of her friends around to help. We mixed the ingredients manually instead of using a hand mixer, and having the flour, sugar and white chocolate/cranberries already weighed out made it very easy. The instructions were also very straightforward. Unfortunately, the mix was way too dry, so we he had to add milk and golden syrup to bring it together. The finished product was certainly delicious, but I wasn’t overly convinced that the given ingredients matched up to the price.

I tried the Chocolate Brownie kit on my own as it required more beating and folding than simple stirring. Again, the instructions were really easy to follow and the mixture was ready to go in the oven in 5 minutes. I could see how this would be a handy kit to have in the cupboard for when the in-laws unexpectedly invite themselves round. “Oh, THESE brownies? Yeah I just whipped them up earlier!”

This time, the ingredient quantities were just right and the outcome was really tasty – soft and slightly gooey in the middle, just like brownies should be.

It’s possible for boxes to be gift-wrapped, and the longer the subscription, the better the value. Based on the two boxes I trialled, the convenience of having things weighed out and prepared is great, but I couldn’t help but think that it was essentially a few bags of flour, sugar, and chocolate chips. I’d love to see kits with more hard-to-find ingredients, and exciting tastes – maybe this will form part of the different boxes as the company expands. If this was the case, I’d definitely be tempted to treat myself or someone I know to a subscription.
