My husband and I went to see Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar at the Bristol Hippodrome. It is an intensely dark play about the story of Jesus Christ leading to his crucifixion and the cast pulled out all the stops to capture the audience. One of the most telling signs of this and the biggest compliment for the cast was when there was a silent section in the play and the whole room fell deathly silent and you could’ve heard a pin drop. Everyone was caught up in the drama that was ensuing before them.

Glenn Carter gave a great performance in his role as Jesus Christ with his vocal range in the songs particularly impressive. Tim Rogers did an excellent job of showing us the turmoil Judas Iscariot went through to make his decision between good and bad. Rachel Adedeji, some may remember from X Factor 2009, delivered a stunning performance as Mary Magdalene mixing emotion with perfect vocals. Cavin Cornwall was brilliantly menacing in his role as Caiaphas with his bass vocals adding to the edgy atmosphere. The supporting cast also deserves credit for a superb performance.

The Bristol Hippodrome was a great place to watch the show from and we felt the old style of the theatre somehow added another dimension to the show that a modern theatre wouldn’t be able to. We love going to the Hippodrome as we are always greeted with a warm welcome and that friendliness exudes from all of the staff. You are spoilt for choice of where to park around the theatre with the Trenchard Street Car Park being the cheapest and one of the closest to the Hippodrome.

We really enjoyed the show however I wouldn’t recommend it to people who aren’t prepared for a heavy and emotionally charged evening. Jesus Christ Superstar tells its story in a brilliantly clever way. There are parts that are gruelling in the show including the climactic ending but if you enjoy serious hard hitting drama, I would highly recommend you go and see this one at the Bristol Hippodrome.
