As spotlights circled around the audience and the words “is anybody out there?” rang out over the speakers, the lights came up on a rather casual looking Jim Davidson. Apparently, the fear of turning up to perform for an empty audience, is one that haunts Mr Davidson. However, he need not have worried, there was a very generous turn out for the first of a two night stint at the Lichfield Garrick, as part of the Jim Davidson: 40 Years On tour.

‘40 Years On’ tells the story of Jim Davidson’s rise to fame, straight from the man himself. He fondly shares memories of his childhood, family and friends as we are taken on a journey through the highs and lows of his life; from a little boy growing up in a council house in south east London, to auditioning for Opportunity Knocks and New Faces and landing life changing jobs, such as Big Break and Generation Game. With resounding honesty, Jim discusses the accusations he faced and even manages to bring some humour into that.

As I was not born 40 years ago, I cannot make a comparison between 40 years prior and 40 years on, however, if 40 years ago Jim Davidson was risky, crude, clever, witty, hilariously funny – to a shocking degree, potentially offensive and somewhat charming and charismatic with it, then I would say that he still has now, what he had then. Most surprising is that among all of the laughs, are some real tender moments and a realisation that at heart lies a man that is very family orientated, honest, down to earth and a huge supporter of our troops.

I had a fantastic night out and would go to see Jim Davidson again in a heartbeat. I would definitely recommend the 40 Years On tour, it is an awe-inspiring story of regular guy’s rise to fame that will have you crying with laughter.
