It was fantastic to hear Wednesday night that Venue Cymru had managed to secure two tickets for me to go along to Jon Richardson’s latest tour the following evening and so it was with much excitement that myself and a friend travelled to the theatre on a sunny September Thursday evening.
I managed to park easily on the road to the back of the theatre, and as on all my previous visits was greeted warmly by all the staff on our arrival. After a quick but efficient bag check by security we were given our tickets and both proceeded to the bar for a quick pre-show drink before finding our seats. An e-mail the evening before had stated that press tickets are not usually set aside for the show and we may be sat in the circle, which of course would have been fine, but it was a wonderful surprise to find our tickets were in a prime position, central to the stage.
Although I have never previously seen Jon Richardson perform stand-up I have regularly watched him on television in programmes such as 8 Out Of 10 Cats, 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown and most recently Married To A Celebrity – The Survival Guide, and have always found him to be extremely funny, but I was unsure what to expect when he would be performing alone rather that as part of an ensemble.
After a small delay he appeared on stage and what followed immediately was a non-stop couple of hours of hilarious stories, often with Jon involving and interacting with the audience in a seamless way. A few people arrived late and of course became the first “victims” of his wit much to the delight of the rest of the audience and the people involved.
The first act passed in a blur with Jon focusing mainly on his insecurities, and his love/hate relationship of Twitter, which again he managed to involve unsuspecting members of the audience. This I have to say this is the part of the show I enjoyed the most and I have to applaud Jon in his dedication and commitment to his research and how he managed to get it into the production.
After a short interval the onslaught of amusing observations continued this time focusing on marriage and family life. The audience were in raptures throughout, and as myself and friend chatted on the journey home, I am sure many like us identified with many of the tales he was telling us.
The second half, like the first flew by and sadly it was soon the end of the show. I have not laughed so much in a very long time. Through the years I have seen quite a few comedians on stage and I can honestly say Jon was up there with the finest and funniest. This tour continues throughout the country until mid-December and I urge everyone to go along.
Oh and Jon if you happen to read this – Three bells, I’m home.
