I was asked to review the Kärcher SC1 Premium Steam Stick with Floor Kit. As I already own and use other Kärcher products I had high expectations.

When the Steam Stick and Floor Kit arrived it was packed in a fairly sizeable box. You get the Steam machine which is mains power operated plus a pack of accessories as follows:

  • Steam Stick Unit in the renowned Kärcher Yellow
  • Floor nozzle
  • Hand tool
  • Detail nozzle
  • Round nylon brush
  • Power nozzle
  • Cotton Floor Cloth
  • Cotton Hand Cloth
  • Accessory Bag – handy for accessory storage

The accessories that come included with the kit mean that the product can be used for a range of different cleaning purposes throughout the home – as a floor cleaner for hard floors, and in the kitchen and bathroom to target grease, mould and everyday dirt. Kärcher describe it as ideal for floors, tiles, work surfaces, taps, mirrors and shower screens thanks to the included accessories.

Before I got started, I laid out all of the accessories on a table and after quick reference to the instruction booklet to work out what was what, I found it very easy to put the relevant parts together and start using it straight away.

My first port of call was our shower as I am always frustrated with the build up of grime around the door which proves very difficult to shift. I used the power nozzle for the hard to reach parts and the round nylon brush on the tile grouting and was really impressed with the results. No cleaning products, just water and the dirt (although stubborn) started to dissolve. I did have to climb into the shower to get to the bits behind the door and with all the steam coming from the Steam Stick I gave myself a facial at the same time!

I also used the machine on our kitchen floor and kitchen wall tiles, which had a build up of grease. The floor came up really well and it took very little time at all to do the whole kitchen and utility room, which I was really happy about!

The main cylinder holds 250ml of water which provides about 6 minutes of steam so it does need to be refilled on a fairly regular basis but it only takes three minutes to heat up and I managed to get my kitchen and utility room floors clean with one fill. As a lot of steam is generated as you go it is advisable to use a cloth at the same time to mop up the liquid (and grime).

The machine is handheld, compact and lightweight. It does need to be plugged into a mains socket but the lead is longer than most electrical items I own so this did not pose any problems for me. I had to move it from one plug to another in the kitchen as I worked but this didn’t affect the usage as I didn’t have to wait for it to heat up again.

I found that it was really easy to change the accessories around. They just clip in and out and the cotton cloths are machine washable.

This product really appeals to me as you don’t have to use it with any detergent or cleaning products. The steam alone is effective and according to the box it kills most bacteria too. My only comment would be that you don’t get the just cleaned fresh smell but I can live with that for the time and effort saved!

As I said at the start I had high expectations and I was not disappointed. I will use the steam stick on a very regular basis in and around my house.
