Kitting Out Your Home Review

Reviewed by Debbie Talbot

I recently moved into a new property after pretty much starting again from scratch, which meant I had a blank canvas to use. I have really enjoyed looking out for items to decorate my home, which make my new place feel like a home. Here are some of items I found.

Living Room/Kitchen

Lakeland Paints kindly sent me some Magnolia paint to review. I decided to just paint three rooms of my new home and just the walls, not the ceilings or wood work.

The walls of my living room/kitchen were painted magnolia but looked really patchy. It took no time at all for my friend to paint this room of my flat and it didn’t need a second coat. Coverage was great, and the walls no longer look patchy. What appealed most of all about the paint was that it is non-toxic, solvent free and odourless.

My kitchen is black and white. I went into Wilko and purchased lots of kitchen items at very reasonable prices. My favourite items in this room of my home have to be the elegant bar stools from HC Supplies which they kindly sent me to review. One is white. The other is black. They complement each other perfectly. Even my tea towels fit in with the black and white kitchen theme.

In the living room I have gone for ‘less is more.’ I snagged a £20 pre-loved chocolate colour sofa bed offered for sale locally. The House Rules canvas was a £5 bargain from Argos. The Dar Lighting Hollywood Matt Black Floor Lamp (RRP: £102 but selling for £73.95) was kindly sent by Dusk Lighting to review – it looks great, has an adjustable head and it switched on with your foot. The entertainment unit was a £5 bargain off of my local selling pages. Throughout the room, pieces of artwork done by the little people in my life are on the wall. This made the final touch to making my new flat truly feel like a home.

Girls Bedroom

Sputnik Paints kindly sent me Sundae Best coloured paint to review. The room was painted in very patchy looking magnolia. The room took no time at all to paint and the different shade of paint did not prove to be a problem at all coverage wise.

This bedroom doubles up as my home office, so I was delighted to be offered a laptop safe by Yale (RRP: £65.87). This is kept in the bottom of the wardrobe.

My favourite item in this bedroom has to be the iDual clip on lamp which was kindly sent to me as a review item, along with 2 bulbs and 2 remote controls. Everyone who has come to the flat loves this lamp. It really does make the whole room. I have even used it out in the hallway while enjoying a relaxing bath. There are so many settings on the remote control. It was great fun trying them all out.

I bought a throw, light box and LED lights from Primark as well as a pug canvas, reed diffuser and glass candle from Wilko which complement the room perfectly.

The vintage floral bedding and matching curtains were an Amazon bargain.

The lampshade was part of a pack of three, purchased from Argos.

Boys bedroom

This room was a bit tricky layout wise as I had two beds to fit in.

Primark had some beautiful blue and white striped bedding. I also bought a white and grey star throw for each bed. The alphabet canvas was a £2.50 bargain in the Amazon sale and the dinosaur canvas was from Argos.

The beds were less than £100 each from an eBay store. The curtains were also tricky as the window is so wide. I therefore purchased two blackout curtains on Amazon, which I still need to alter as they were so long. The wardrobe was a preloved Ikea one and I already had the cube units which were purchased from Argos a few months ago. The lampshade was part of a pack of 3, purchased from Argos. This bedroom was painted using Lakeland Paints in a magnolia shade. I am delighted with the results as it looked so patchy before.

I love my new home. It didn’t take long for it to feel like home and considering I was almost starting again from scratch, I am delighted to have kitted it out for just a few hundred pounds.
