I think it’s important to have waterproofs for all the family so that you don’t end up cooped in the house at the first sign of rain, which, let’s face it is more days than not in the UK! My boys like to be out exploring and a bit of rain doesn’t stop them from wanting to be outside. Although it is summer, we have had opportunity to use these in the rain already as we have the joys of typical wet UK weather in the north! They are also good wind protection in windy conditions even if there’s no rain so were also handy on our trip to the seaside.

Kozi Kids are a UK based company who model their designs on Swedish ideas, where rain doesn’t stop play. It’s refreshing to see clothing being designed by a UK based company.

The essential rain set that was sent to me consists of a waterproof jacket and matching waterproof trousers, which are a dungaree type style done up via elastic over the shoulders so cover more than just the trouser area. They come in navy, red or yellow so have a simple choice of gender neutral colours for everyone (we received the navy version). I received these items in a sealed bag, nicely folded with tissue paper protecting parts of them from damage in transit.

The material used feels of high quality and the stitching is all neat. Although these are waterproof items they are made from a thicker material than standard adult waterproofs and feel much more durable against catching and other things children are bound to do while wearing them.

My 6 year old was happy to try these items out and found both parts easy to put on by himself. His only issue was with where the elastic on the bottom of the trousers should go. Having not long been on a seaside holiday and seen fisherman in all their gear, he said that he felt like a fisherman once the trousers were fully up and the jacket was on. He’s not been used to wearing waterproof trousers that have straps that come up over his shoulders. I can see the advantages of these though as they’re protected from falling down this way, unless the clasp is undone. This means they can’t be pulled down by his brother in the same way as an elasticated waist pair of waterproof trousers can!

The sizing is quite generous. However, I much preferred the sizing being in height than age as it can be tricky to guess what age you need when buying from a new company as every company sizes children up slightly differently. If you find, as I did, that the trousers are a little too long for your child then you can cross the straps over on the top of the trousers to pull them up a little more. The trousers will also generally be tucked into wellies anyway so slightly long trousers aren’t really an issue.

I love that the item is a 2 piece set rather than being an all in one waterproof outfit. This means it has more uses as each piece can also be used on their own if wanted. The jacket itself is a great jacket. There are several features that stand out; There is a peak on the hood which provides extra protection to the face from rain and is a great addition, especially when we have them on our waterproof jackets so he’s pleased he can now match ours. The cuffs are elasticated so they stay over the clothing worn underneath and don’t allow water in to the jacket. There is an extra design feature at the top of the zip that stops the zip from catching on the chin when being zipped up, which is always handy with little ones who want to do zips up themselves. The poppers are really easy to do up and undo. The poppers used all match the colour of the jacket and trousers too so blend in rather than being noticeable. This helps the items look good and I had people complement them and ask what make they were while my son was wearing them.

Both items are lightweight so are easy to roll up and put in a rucksack or other bag when not in use. They also have built in name labels, which is great for when they’ll be used for school and other places where they’ll be hung up and potentially mixed up with lots of other children’s items.

I like that the items are durable enough to be machine washable, meaning you’re able to just chuck them in the washing machine to clean them rather than having to hand wipe mud and dirt off after a mucky outing.

Being summer I’ve not seen the reflective circles that are on both the jacket and trousers in action in the dark but feel they are a good added safety feature for a child to be seen when wearing these, especially on dark nights in winter.

One downside of the jacket is that it doesn’t have any pockets. I don’t mind so much but it meant that my son couldn’t pocket the normal amount of ‘useful’ stuff that he does when out walking (acorns, conkers, fir cones, stones and such like!) which he was disappointed about. He was also unable to access any pockets in his trousers underneath the waterproofs because of the style of the waterproof trousers and how they come up over undergarments in the same way that dungarees do (and I refused to allow him to fill my pockets. Mean Mummy!)

They aren’t the cheapest children’s waterproofs on the market but they are a good quality item and I believe they are well worth the money.

I give these items 5/5 and will happily be recommending them to my family and friends.
