Celebrating its 40th anniversary next year, the AA rosette La Bonne Auberge brasserie at Holiday Inn Glasgow Theatreland is something of a dining institution in Glasgow.

Located in the heart of Theatreland and surrounded by some of Glasgow’s top theatres, as well as Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, La Bonne Auberge offers an authentic French Mediterranean brasserie experience in the heart of the city centre.

That makes it the perfect place to pop in for a bite to eat either pre or post theatre, or to enjoy a leisurely lunch with friends and family when out for a day or night on the town.

On our visit we were torn between the appealing prix fixe menu and its new a la carte menu. In the end, we were unable to resist the temptation of the a la carte options.

Whilst my partner opted for the French onion soup, served with gruyere cheese crouton, I plumped for the McSweens haggis served with cider braised swede, mash potatoes and a whisky jus. Verdict? Delicious and the portions just about right.

Onto the main dishes – and my partner opted for the whole grilled sole, served with deliciously plump and juicy prawns, baby capers, lemon and parsley butter and herb rosevale potatoes. I chose a classic: a braised Scotch beef bourguignon, which came slow cooked with red burgundy, pearl onions, mushrooms and Ramsays bacon served with buttery mash.

Whilst my partner enjoyed a glass of crisp, fresh dry white Picpoul de Pinet, Domaine Sainte-Anne, from Languedoc, Roussillon with her sole, my beef bourguignon was complemented perfectly with a glass of the intense red Carignan, from Pays d’Herault.

The meal was rounded off for my partner by a warm coconut and raspberry tart, with pistachio ice cream and chocolate sauce and, for myself, by a La Bonne Auberge summer sundae comprising raspberry sorbet, strawberry and vanilla ice creams with honeycomb and passion fruit – the perfect finale to a delicious meal on a warm summer evening.

It might be knocking 40 but, if our dining experience is anything to go by, then La Bonne Auberge will be around for many years to come as its fantastic fresh dishes offer both value for money and exceptional cuisine.

Rating: 5/5 thumbs_up
