Ladival Sun Protection Review

Reviewed by David Savage

Well, apparently it’s Summer time. Unfortunately, here in Manchester it has been very hit and miss. We had a great week of hot sun before the schools broke up for their Summer holidays and had a lot of rain and overcast days since.

I was sent some Ladival Sun Protection lotion and spray for review and the weather hasn’t been the greatest to try it out. So on Friday and Saturday with the sun out, nice and warm and with an obvious risk of sunburn I had the perfect opportunity to give it a try.

Not paying much attention to sun creams in the past I assumed they were all the same, but they are all very different and Ladival not only protect against UV-A and UV-B rays, like most sun creams, but also protects against Infrared-A rays that penetrate the skin (apparently IR-A make up 30% of the sun’s rays). So with Ladival’s Infrared IR-D Defence system you are protected against 4x more of the sun’s rays.

Now, I’m not one for sunbathing but do spend a lot of time walking everywhere so tend to burn my neck and head very easily so decided to use to use SPF 50+ lotion (Ladival Sun Protection is available as a spray or lotion in SPF 15, 30, 50 and 50+, so something to suit everyone).

The cream itself is perfume free but does have a slight, not unpleasant, fragrance. It rubs in very easily and absorbs into the skin very quickly and is non greasy. It is also for use on sensitive skin and is water resistant.

I have never had any adverse reactions to sun creams and haven’t had any issues with Ladival. That said, the children have had issues with a well-known, quality brand that is readily available everywhere; it brought them out in a rash on their neck and arms within 20 minutes of applying. So I was reluctant to cover them in a brand I had never heard of before and applied a very small amount to their arm (I used the spray rather than the lotion this time as just easier to get on a constantly moving 4 year old). They have had no reaction to using it and so far when using it I have seen no sign of prickly heat that both boys suffer from. I have used the SPF 15, 30 when overcast and not so hot, as the boys still need some level of protection when out and about (just because the sun isn’t showing doesn’t mean you can’t get burnt!), although I will probably stick to the SPF 50+ just to be on the safe side!

So overall, the Ladival Sun Protection is doing its job as none of us have sunburn (and the boys spend a lot of time in the park or the garden). It hasn’t caused any adverse reactions as it is a gentle cream; it does not contain any preservatives, perfumes, colourants, fats, parabens or PEG emulsifiers making it perfect for sensitive or oily skin (although as with any cream you haven’t used before always try a small bit first to test it).

Now the cost is quite high with a RRP of £19.99 (150ml spray or 200ml lotion), so is it worth it? The simple answer is yes! As I mentioned earlier, both boys have reactions to a well-known brand that costs around £7 to £8 and I have had to spend £20 on another brand of sun cream that they have no reaction to but only offers UV-A/UV-B protection. So with Ladival offering the extra level of IR-A protection without any adverse effects (at least for us) it has to be worth the investment. I found the spray easier to manage as with the lotion I tend to use too much but as you get that little bit more in the lotion I would probably get the same usage out of both. Although even applying it quite liberally a little bit does cover a lot so should last a while.

Now I can’t comment of how well it does protect against IR-A but it has been clinically proven to effectively protect human skin against damage caused by IR-A radiation.

So I would have to recommend Ladival as it is not greasy, the slight fragrance is only noticeable if you get very close to sniff it, it absorbs into the skin very quickly and seems to be doing the job its designed to do. And currently available in Boots for only £10!
