As a lover of both baking and eating cakes I was really looking forward to reviewing Lady Berry’s cupcake decorating class. As a beginner in fondant icing I was a little bit nervous that I would slow the class down but as soon as I walked through the door I was reassured.
The class is based behind the Wandsworth Southside Shopping, London in a very beautiful and homely environment. You can easily park in the NCT car park or walk from Wandsworth Town tube station. I was the first to arrive and had a lovely chat with the brilliant and inspiring lady who was teaching the class. Two other students joined us and we began with a tea and some beautifully decorated homemade gingerbread biscuits.
The 12 cupcakes that we were designing were displayed on the table for us to see before we began and I truly had no idea where to start and was thinking there would be no way I could produce what was on show! First took 12 pre baked (and delicious) cakes, covered them in butter icing and rolled out some white fondant icing to use our first cutters and make the tops to the cupcakes. We had a variety of patterns we could use to emboss the icing beautifully. Once ‘topped’ the cakes were ready for decorating. We took one design at a time and our teacher took us through step by step how to mould the icing in the shape that you need and how lots of small and simple parts, when placed together in the right way, make a beautiful design.
Our teacher was truly talented. Not only was she clearly very creative with some amazing cupcake designs but I think what stood apart from other classes I have attended is that she was clearly a very brilliant teacher. The class ran at pace appropriate for all, she was very patient and really taught so well that it was a rare occurrence for anyone not to be able to master something that was being taught.
We had a tea break complete with cupcake and freshly whipped butter icing – yum. The whole class was designed and taught with such care and attention to detail. By the end of the four hours we had designed 12 different, extremely professional looking cupcakes including a snowman, Christmas wreath, letter box and letters, gingerbread man, robin, snowman and my personal favourite a Christmas pudding.
I have done some cupcake decorating classes in the past and this really stood apart in quality. Not only was the class relaxing and fun, I actually really learnt from it without even trying! I learnt about various tools I could easily use at home and simple ways to use fondant icing to make really amazing creations. I feel like I could genuinely replicate at home and as a beginner I really didn’t expect that. My friends and family all commented on how professional the cakes looked. At the end of the class we received a certificate of completion and had some pictures done which you can receive via email after the course has finished – a nice touch.
In summary, a fantastic class. My favourite review to date. I would absolutely recommend. Fun, educational (without you realising) and relaxing with an incredibly talented teacher and extremely professional cupcakes designs.
