Legally Blonde The Musical at the Liverpool Empire Review

On Tuesday evening a friend and I headed to Liverpool’s Empire Theatre to watch Legally Blonde the musical. Having both enjoyed the original film during our teenage years it was with great excitement we arrived at the theatre to see this musical.

Right from the beginning of show you could tell this was going to be an upbeat, feel good show and that feeling grew as the performance continued. The stage adaptation stays true to the film with Lucie Jones stepping into the pink heels of our protagonist Elle Woods. Lucie was a superb Elle and really made you fall in love with this character all over again. As Elle continues her story and makes her way to Harvard Law School we are introduced to the other main characters including Bill Ward as Professor Callahan, David Barrett as Emmett Forrest and my personal favourite Rita Simons as Paulette Bonafonté. These actors along with the rest of the superb cast performed such a wonderful show that you couldn’t help but get swept away in the story. The whole company were absolutely brilliant however I think it’s fair to say the biggest stars of the show were the two canine performers playing Bruiser and Rufus, they definitely got the biggest “awwww” from the audience.

As well as outstanding acting the music and dance in the show was absolutely brilliant. The songs were well written and moved the story along whilst often being absolutely hilarious. The comedic elements of the show took me by surprise, I really wasn’t expecting it to be that funny but I found myself laughing a lot throughout the show. It wasn’t just a joke here and there, every single actor on stage made us laugh at one point or another although special mention has to go to Ben Harlow who played, amongst other parts, Kyle B O’Boyle. The character of Kyle alone was highly amusing but when paired with the character of Paulette they were fantastic.

The main thing that made this such a good show was the sense you got that the cast were also having fun, their positive energy radiated from the stage and infected the audience with laughter and happy feelings. Whether you’re a die hard fan or have never seen the film before I can guarantee you will love this musical!
