Mamma Mia at the Regent Theatre Stoke Review

Reviewed by Catherine Brown

The hilarious and entertaining musical ‘Mamma Mia’ is currently at the Regent Theatre, Stoke-on-Trent as part of a national tour. The energetic show, originally released as a film starring Meryl Streep, is based around classic ABBA tracks and remains a must-see for fans of musical comedies.

Sophie (Lucy May Barker) is a young girl, soon to be married, who has been brought up by her mother Donna (Donna Sheridan) on a Greek island. She has never known her father but finding her Mum’s diary has given Sophie the chance to invite Sam, Harry and Bill – the three possible Dad’s – to her wedding. Drama follows as Donna is shocked by their appearance and they all react differently to the news.

The show combines energy and exuberance while also focusing on mother/daughter relationships and the choices we make for love. The way the ABBA songs such as ‘Knowing me, knowing you’, ‘Voulez-vous’ and ‘’Take a chance on me’ were intertwined with the script worked seamlessly.

Throughout the night the talented cast demonstrated excellent musical and dance ability. My favourite characters were Donna’s friends Tanya and Rosie played by Emma Clifford and Gillian Hardie. Their version of ‘Dancing Queen’ was highly comical and had the audience in stitches. The choreography of the ensemble added to the drama and entertainment. Another bonus was seeing Sophie’s fiancé Sky (Phillip Ryan) and his stags performing in their trunks!

The only disappointment for me was that due to our position off centre and the position of the rotating stage, we were often able to see characters preparing to come onto stage which was a bit of a distraction.

The Regent Theatre is in the Hanley area of the city and as always the staff were warm and welcoming.  The piano bar is a perfect place to have a pre-show glass of wine with a musical accompaniment, while the main foyer stocks a variety of drinks and snacks.

I had a fantastic time and would give this show a 4/5 rating.
