Mamma Mia is a great escape from the Christmas madness.
Running at Theatre Royal in Glasgow city centre until the 30th December 2017, Mamma Mia is produced by Phyllida Lloyd and based on the book by Catherine Johnson. It is set to musical hits by the 1970’s phenomena ABBA with the music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus.
In an attempt to discover who her father is, Sophie sends invitations to her wedding to the three contenders she discovers from reading her mum, Donna’s diary.
The arrival of the three contrasting men to the Greek Island, travel writer, Bill, Harry the stockbroker and Sam, an architect upsets Donna (Helen Hobson) but she has her former band members and best friends Tanya and Rosie to cheer her up. The trio have a great report and are well cast in their roles… their rendition of Chiquitita is very funny!
Lucy May Barker encapsulates the emotions Sophie experiences with a wonderful vocal performance.
The musical number all fit well to the storyline and the flow of the production. There won’t be many people who don’t recognise the songs such as Thank you for the Music, Money, Money, Money, Dancing Queen, Winner Takes All, Super Trooper and of course Mamma Mia!
We were seated in the balcony which although it sits high above the stage, the visibility and sound were great. The seats are well tiered which helps and there is enough legroom. As I have not sat in the balcony of the Theatre Royal before, I hadn’t appreciated the scale of the theatre. The staff were very friendly and helpful, professionally rectifying any problems.
Mamma Mia is an uplifting show suitable for all the family, I went with my eight-year-old daughter who was captivated and although there are plenty of innuendo’s they are subtle enough they went over her head!
Tickets cost from £21.40 to £74.40 (plus £2.85 transaction fee).
