On Sunday (8 October 2017) myself, my husband and our two daughters aged 5 years old and 9 months old visited The Lowry Theatre at Salford Quays to watch a performance of Me presented by Little Angel Theatre.
Me is based upon the popular children’s book of the same name, written by Emma Dodd. It is the story of a very small penguin exploring a very big, vast, deep, steep world. The show was performed by Samuel Dutton with the captivating penguin puppets. The whole experience was enchanting, from the simple, yet perfect set, to the dazzling lighting effects, to the emotive music. There is little dialogue, just enough to keep a small child’s attention when added to the music which in itself told the story. There were lots of giggles and gasps from the young audience as the story progressed.
The performance was held in The Lowry’s Aldridge studio. An intimate theatre that lent itself to the low key production and was less overwhelming than the larger theatre spaces for even the youngest theatre goer. At 45 minutes long the show was the ideal length to capture small children’s imaginations without being long enough for their attention to wander.
The show is a touring production from the Little Angel Theatre based in Islington, North London. The theatre calls itself a “home for puppetry” and based upon today’s performance what a lovely home it must be. For over 50 years the theatre has been captivating audiences with their puppet performances. The actual puppets were delightful, totally mesmerising both the children and the adults in the audience.
Our whole family enjoyed this production, with my five year old exclaiming that she “loved that” as we left the theatre. It was a completely charming children’s show that I would definitely recommend to anyone with young children.
