Milkshake Live at the Royal Leamington Spa Theatre was a true family delight. The theatre was packed and full of happy excited faces. Although there was a wide variety of ages present I’d say it was best aimed for pre-schoolers. As we went during half term we took our two pre-schoolers and one reception aged child who also enjoyed it. The theatre itself is beautiful, comfy seats well set out and the staff present were all very helpful and kind. Toilets were clean and signage was very clear to help find our way around.

The premise of the show was that its Milkshake Monkey’s birthday and we as the audience and the two presenters of the show were going to organise a surprise party for Monkey. There was lots of audience participation in singing and dancing. The show included Little Princess, Pip from Pip Ahoy!, the Bananas in Pyjamas, Bello from Jelly Jamm, Chloe from Chloe’s Closet, Tommy and Tallulah from Tickety Toc, Toby and Dolores from Toby’s Travelling Circus, Noddy and Tessie Bear from the morning TV line up. They all brought different elements to the show, there was some magic along with some DJing. The story was very simple but that was really good as it made it very easy for the youngsters to follow and just enjoy the experience.

The children loved that they knew the cast already and got very excited waving and shouting hello. It was a real family environment where everyone joined in. Sometimes taking young children out can be a bit daunting as you worry they may be too loud, but in this show that was actively encouraged which made it enjoyable for children and parents alike.

The one downside to the show was the very long intermission. It was hard to keep the children interested as it was just too long, we did note a few families left midway and we felt this was due to the very long wait.

The two presenters from the TV show were very skilled at ensuring that all the audience felt included, they caught eyes with people and smiled and made sure that they were looking at all areas of the theatre which really impressed me.

It was the first time our three children had been to a theatre show and I was so glad that this was the one we chose as they enjoyed it. The show which lasted around 90 minutes including intermission was the right length to keep their attention. They are really excited to go along to the theatre again and I’m so happy we have started the love of theatre in them so young.

These get a well-deserved 4/5 stars.
