Whilst the weather is still against us I ventured out today (9 April 2018) with my three girls in the rain and headed for the High Wycombe Swan to see Chanel 5’s Milkshake Live! Being 6 & 4 this was totally up their street – including the trip into the theatre itself which caused much excitement because ‘it’s what grown-ups do!’.
The Swan is a brilliant theatre with parking right next door, so you literally walk 10 paces and you’re there – perfect for the afore mentioned delightful Easter holiday rain! The toilets are big and clean and there is hardly ever a queue for the bar they are so efficient at serving everyone swiftly. As far as local Buckinghamshire theatres goes this really is my favourite and with the auditorium seating 1,076 you are guaranteed to have a good view no matter where you’re sat.
You don’t know which two presenters you’re going to get with each Milkshake Live performance, but my girls were pretty excited to see Olivia and Amy bound onto the stage to introduce themselves. The show is very lively without being over the top and even as a grown up it’s hard to not clap and dance along in your seat. The narrative of the show revolves around the Milkshake Monkey and an adventure he undertakes through quite a few well-known fairy stories.
Along the way we get to see on stage some of the milkshake stars such as Fireman Sam, Bob the builder, Little Princess and by far High Wycombe’s favourites Shimmer and Shine!
What I really liked the most about this show was that whilst they had the undivided attention of the children in the room they were really using their platform to send out important responsible messages – ones that mean far more coming from Fireman Sam or The Big Bad Wolf than from either myself or my husband. We learned about ‘getting down, walking away and calling for help’ if we discover a fire from Sam, about not taking things that don’t belong to us from Jack and his new giant friend as well as how important sharing is with Goldilocks, the three bears and the big bad wolf among others.
If you have pre-school/infant school age children I would highly recommend this show, the four of us had a brilliant time – I mean name me a parent who doesn’t love singing and dancing to the shimmer and shine theme tune!!!
