With a young family to look after there is little time for my husband and I to enjoy a night out so we were thrilled to be invited to review a meal a Miller & Carter in Penn. As the website suggested, we dressed to impress and made the short journey to the restaurant, still known locally as Penn Cottage.

We were shocked to find that on a Tuesday evening the car park was full to bursting and we struggled to find one of only few remaining spaces. Inside we were greeted quickly and shown to our reserved table. They had placed us on a cosy table for two on a raised area overlooking the very busy restaurant which was a great vantage point to see what fabulous meals the other diners are enjoying! This clever use of raised seating areas maximises the restaurant space and every table seemed to be occupied!

Our waitress introduced herself and took our drinks order while we chose from the extensive menu and although we were spoilt for choice we both agreed that we really should try one of their famous steaks! As it was such a hot evening we opted for bread and olives instead of one of the delicious but filling sounding starters which were brought to the table quickly and there was plenty to share.

All steak dishes are served with Miller and Carters signature slice of onion loaf and an iceburg lettuce wedge with a choice of 4 dressings. You may also choose from one of 5 steak sauces with something for everyone’s taste. My rare rump steak was cooked to perfection and the ribs on my husband’s steak and ribs dish simply fell off the bone! It’s the sign of a very good meal when there is no conversation as you both sit savouring every mouthful, the silence was only broken when the waitress popped back to ask if all was well with our meal

Portion sizes are very generous so we shared a rather delicious Farmhouse Jersey ice cream for dessert in favour of some of the richer options and Wayne tried a coffee. In spite of the restaurant being incredibly busy, all our courses were served quickly and in a very friendly, chatty manner. I actually asked if it was usually this busy early on in the week and we were told that they were fully booked due to it being “graduation” season and a popular venue for celebrations.

Like ourselves, most diners were dressed for dinner but in spite of the websites guidelines that “smart casual is required or dress to impress” we were a little disappointed to see fellow diners being seated in t-shirts, cut off shorts and flip flops – perhaps the dress code was relaxed in view of the extreme heat but it wasn’t what some people would be expecting from a venue with a reputation of being somewhere special to go.

Our experience was memorable, we had a fabulous meal and their prices reflect the excellent standard of food and service that we received. The staff were welcoming, friendly and efficient and are to be commended for coping with a full restaurant, stifling heat and serving every customer with a smile and enthusiasm!

Their extensive menus can be found here, with an evening and daytime menu and we were pleased to find a younger guests menu without a chicken nugget in sight!

We had a memorable evening and look forward to dressing up for another visit very soon – fantastic food, great staff, lovely décor and atmosphere, shame about the dress code.
